Senescence
By Definition: The process of growing old and deterioration
Wordless portraits speak loudly about resilience and fragility through their singular expressions.
I evaluate the discarded and overlooked materials to create work that ask you to think about what is of personal value. The vulnerability of unstretched canvas distressed with layers of wash to disrupt the purity of a blank canvas, with the canvas itself being drop cloth; something intended to be stepped on and to absorb the negligent mess of those above it. Materiality influences the way we observe works, I use a large range of materials in each painting dependent on the mood I am trying to convey; charcoal alludes to being unfixed, messy, dark or shadowing, while acrylic wash is light, fast to run, permanent but malleable. The goal is to employ large vigorous body movements while working that invoke the feeling of subdued chaos and the ever-changing thoughts we have about ourselves.
Using mixed media, I am able to create expressive representational figurative artworks that focus on mental health issues, their ramifications on body image issues and socio-political destruction to our environments.
I have chosen to present the artworks surrounded by personal artifacts that have become staple elements of my artistic process.
